Determination, Discipline and Motivation (DDM) have long been heralded as the must have attributes for any member of the coaching team in Football Manager. The accepted combined value for these 3 attributes, that I have seen in other guides, is 42 (which is an average of 14 per attribute), but I'm not sure that you need all 3 present together to get the results you want...
Here I give my thought of how these attributes affect your coaching:
Determination
This attribute is all about how determined the individual is to improve themself. A higher score here will mean that the coach may improve in coaching attributes over time and they will always fly through coaching qualifications (which should also bring coaching attribute increases). As such, this attribute has more of a slow burn effect on any results on the training pitch;
Discipline
This attribute refers to how strict a coach carrying out their duties. For me, this attribute becomes important if you have a number of less determined players or a squad with an overall poorer mentality. Simply because you want the players to work hard and pay attention. If you have a team of model professionals, this won't be an issue. Maybe a good attribute to look at for youth coaches too?;
Motivation
For me, this attribute is the most important of the 3. The higher the rating the more the coach can get from your players in his training session. And I think that it doesn't matter the personality of the player or squad, because you want to maximise their participation in training.
So as I said above, whilst all 3 are important, I don't think you need them all. If you are struggling to find coaches with all 3 with high enough ratings, I would prioritise motivation over the other 2. Further, I would then next prioritise discipline.
Just one last note... When I look at other, non-coaching, staff members I do look at things slightly differently. If the staff member is my Chief / Head X then I look at Man Management. I want them to be able to organise their team effectively (this would also apply to a DoF). For scouts I actually look at determination. I want them to be doing their damndest to be scouting those extra few players on assignment (Adaptability too if they are scouting abroad) and for physios and sports scientists I look at discipline because you better believe I want my players listening to those guys to recover from or prevent injuries.
So that's my interpretation of the key non-coaching attributes for staff members. Maybe you look at something else? Maybe you don't think it matters?
